On the 20th - 21st May 2004, the Sustainable Planning Forum workshop was held at Panorama House, Townsville. The key objectives of the workshop were to bring internal and external stakeholders of Townsville City Council together to consider the sustainable future of our City.

Four other events were held in support of the workshop.

  • Sustainability Change Agents Training for Coordinators and Supervisors
  • Council Executive Briefing on Sustainability
  • Executive Briefing on Sustainability for Council Partners from Business, Government and Community.

For the two day workshop, participants were led through a series of group tasks to consider the key sustainability elements of economic, social, wellbeing and nature for our City. These tasks included the consideration of the key assets and infrastructure, and Council-Community concerns and values to create a vision for Townsville’s long term future. The workshop considered past, present and future trends for the prosperity of Townsville. A draft set of indicators based on workshop participants’ perceptions was developed. The workshop also identified ideas and innovations for the future and finally identified strategies to implement them.

In summary 4 key strategies were identified as key leverage points for the future of the City. These include:

  1. To establish a Centre of Excellence of Innovation and Sustainability in the City of Townsville – linked with education establishments and industry – including a possible CRC (Cooperative Research Centre) for Innovation and Sustainability.
  2. To integrate sustainability principles and initiatives into the future Rocky Springs Satellite City 2015
  3. To develop and implement a Carbon Neutral Water Recycling plant for the whole city of Townsville – This was also linked to alternative energy sources for the city including Methane, and wind generation
  4. To hold a Sustainability Summit for the whole Region.
“Achieving sustainability does not mean slowing down our economy. It means speeding it up, and directing our energy toward the redesign and redevelopment of existing systems that create new opportunities for the future”.
Alan AtKisson, President, AtKisson Inc 2004
