Clean Up Australia Day is a community event celebrated nationally every year.

Over the years, it has grown both in popularity and importance, which make this community event "the largest annual community environmental campaign in Australia".

Clean up Australia Day is celebrated every first Sunday in March. In addition, there are two other clean up activities, Business Clean Up Day and Schools Clean Up Day.

Townsville City Council will assist community groups and schools, who would like to participate in the event, with sites identification and registration. Council will also provide assistance with collection of rubbish picked up during the event.

Participating in Clean Up Australia Day is an opportunity to make a positive difference to the health of our environment and contributes to making Townsville a cleaner and healthier place to live.

Townsville City Council's "Don't Waste Townsville" campaign endorses Clean Up Australia as one of the means where the whole sections of the community can be actively involved in litter management. Other means of community involvement are through clean up activities associated with Tidy Towns, Clean Beach Challenge and Adopt a Road program.

Don't Waste Townsville campaign has three prime functions:

1. To produce a blueprint for the co-ordination of litter management resources across Council
   
   
2. To change the culture of the Townsville community through a comprehensive promotional and educational campaign on litter management
   
   
3. To provide a model strategy suitable for adoption on a local, regional and state-wide basis.
   

Don't Waste Townsville campaign aims to promote responsible litter management through community involvement and educational campaigns. The campaign educational programs are delivered through the LAWMAC bus - Mobile Waste Education Unit.
